Rescue Plans

OSHA requires a written rescue plan before employees enter a permit required confined space. IS&R can work with you to create and write a procedure outlining the best possible work environment in compliance with OSHA standards.

IS&R’s safety and rescue professionals are W-2 employees, not independent 1099 contractors. This employment structure allows IS&R to maintain consistent expectations for training, supervision, equipment use, jobsite procedures, and emergency response readiness.

What training and experience do IS&R rescue professionals have?

IS&R rescue professionals include trained first responders, EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, and experienced safety professionals. Team members receive specialized preparation for confined space operations, technical rescue, atmospheric hazards, retrieval systems, emergency communication, and medical response.

Does IS&R provide an on-site rescue team or an on-call service?

IS&R provides on-site standby rescue coverage. Our team is positioned at the jobsite while confined space work is being performed rather than waiting off-site for an emergency call.

Being on-site allows the rescue team to become familiar with the space, review potential hazards, stage the appropriate equipment, and respond immediately if an entrant needs assistance.

How does IS&R determine the appropriate rescue team for a project?

Before the project begins, IS&R reviews the confined space, known and potential hazards, entry and exit points, work being performed, number of entrants, project schedule, and anticipated rescue challenges.

This information helps us determine the appropriate staffing, rescue equipment, communication procedures, and emergency response strategy for the project.

Does the rescue team arrive with its own equipment?

Yes. IS&R maintains specialized rescue vehicles, trailers, and equipment for confined space and technical rescue operations.

Equipment may include atmospheric monitors, ventilation systems, tripods, winches, rope systems, rescue harnesses, retrieval devices, respiratory protection, communication equipment, medical supplies, oxygen, and AEDs. The specific equipment brought to the site is based on the space and its identified hazards.

Can IS&R help review or develop our confined space rescue plan?

Yes. IS&R can review an existing rescue plan or help develop a site-specific procedure for the project.

The plan may address rescue team responsibilities, communication procedures, access and retrieval methods, required equipment, atmospheric hazards, medical response, and coordination with the employer’s entry team.

Can your rescue professionals provide medical assistance?

IS&R teams include trained first responders, EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, and other qualified professionals who can provide immediate assistance within the scope of their training.

This combination of technical rescue and medical response experience is especially important when an entrant becomes injured or experiences a medical emergency inside a confined space.

Does IS&R also provide confined space training for our employees?

Yes. IS&R offers hands-on Confined Space Entry and Rescue Training for entrants, attendants, entry supervisors, rescue personnel, and other employees responsible for confined space safety.

Training can be conducted at IS&R’s fully equipped Westwood, Massachusetts training facility or at qualified client locations throughout New England. Courses can be tailored to your workplace, equipment, operations, and employee responsibilities.
